A. Course Description:

Latin I covers all noun declensions, all verb conjugations in the indicative and imperative moods as well as adjectives and other substantives as students learn how to translate Latin into English.

B. Course Objectives/Methods:

This course focuses on analysis and application of a fundamental vocabulary, the morphology of five noun declensions and four verb conjugations, other pertinent grammatical forms and rules as well as the syntax of sentences for translation.  Classes are conducted using the Socratic method to encourage critical thinking skills.

C. Course Goals:

Students will be able to do the Following:

  • Value language as a gift from God;
  • Recognize the reciprocal impact between language and culture;
  • Detect the general principles of language construction;
  • Evaluate the lexical and linguistic relationships between Latin and English;
  • Generate an appreciation for all great literature as they become involved in the original sources;
  • Demonstrate poetic ability in writing and speaking;
  • Relate the many influences of Latin and the Roman Empire to Western Civilization;
  • Integrate knowledge of Latin with other disciplines studied;
  • Develop the processes of induction and deduction through study of Latin;
  • Expand Latin and English vocabulary.
