A. Course Description:
Literature 7 is a study of the literature and writings from the Ancient Civilizations of Sumer, Egypt, Israel, Greece, and Rome through that of the Middle Ages. The assigned readings are in tandem with the students' study of the histories of these periods of civilization. Class discussions center on the historical impact of the writings, as well as literary characteristics.
B. Course Objectives:
This course is designed to train students in the Dialectic stage to read purposefully, to think critically, and to recognize the characteristics of great literature. Building on acquired knowledge of literary concepts, such as Setting, Characters, Plot, and Theme, students will develop skill in plot and sub-plot analysis. Character analysis will include refutation or confirmation regarding the actions of the protagonist and antagonist.
C. Course Goals:
Students will be able to do the following:
- Identify literary terms and use them appropriately;
- Isolate plots from sub-plots and analyze their make-up;
- Discuss authors' ideas within the context of history and literature;
- Develop critical thinking skills;
- Develop organized thinking skills;
- Identify authors' and characters' worldviews;
