A. Course Description:

The history course for the eighth grade will examine the important historical developments of the Renaissance, Reformation, Enlightenment periods of Western Europe as they lay the foundations of the Colonial and Revolutionary eras of 17th and 18th century America.  The study of history will work in conjunction with the literature class.

B. Course Objectives/Methods:

            The course is designed to train students in the dialectic stage while preparing         them for the Rhetoric stage through practicing critical thinking, analysis, and         evaluation.  We will practice discussion, note taking, writing, and debate as the       tools of learning history.

C.  Course Goals

Students will be able to do the Following:

  • analyze the cultural, political, artistic, theological, philosophical and economic developments of the Renaissance, Reformation, and Enlightenment eras of history, as well as the influence of these eras on the development of American government.
  • articulate their understanding of these developments in a way that is pleasing.
  • evaluate historical and governmental developments through the lens of a Christian worldview, recognizing history as the outworking of God's plan.
  • examine and evaluate major figures and events of these eras.
  • summarize the influence of geography on these historical events..
  • Students will utilize the tools of knowledge, such as writing, discussion, organization, and debate in conjunction with their growing knowledge of history.
